Editorial: Twitch Plays Pokemon Part 2

And will for all of eternity.

Twitch Continues To Play Pokémon

Twitch Plays Pokemon has exceeded all expectations thus far. After the first generation was done, the fans called for them to continue. It seems there will be a possibility that they will play through the all the generations of Pokemon. But it is now time to give the fans the highlights of the last half of generation one!

Some will remember when we last left Red he had just defeated Sabrina. If the battle seemed fierce, it was nothing compared to the exit of the gym. After many hours, Red emerged and some joked that it was harder to leave the gym then to beat Sabrina. The twelve hours that followed are referred to as “The Bloody Sunday”. With six gym badges under Red’s belt and a master ball, the question of who would be the next great catch erupted. The debate was between five of the following Pokemon: Moltres, Articuno, Zapdos, Snorlax, and Mewtwo. Mewtwo was out of the question because the Elite Four had to be defeated to catch him. Most people did not want Snorlax, so it was down to the legendary birds. Moltres would have taken more time, Aticuno was voted down, and Zapdos became the choice. The dreaded ledge became an obstacle again, but it was soon overcome. Upon the newly acquired Lapras, they successfully entered the Power Plant and caught Zapdos. This was seen as a miracle given by Lord Helix until the events that immediately followed. A problem again surfaced because they had to withdraw Zapdos from the PC. In the process, twelve Pokemon were released. Among them included: Dux, Bigrat, the Gloom known as “The Seed of Hope”. It was genocide on the largest scale Twitch Plays Pokemon had seen so far. Not only clearing out half of our roster, but Zapdos was not even withdrawn. By the grace of Helix, the players were able to get to the daycare where they deposited Rickgastly into their care and withdrew Zapdos. He was nicknamed “Anarchy Jesus”, or “AJ” for short.

Except bugs. He fucking hates bugs.

Bird Jesus loves everybody equally.

The next goal was to return to Pallet Town, and surf down to Cinnabar Island. During the journey, another moonstone was acquired. It was used to evolve the Nidorino into Nidoking called “The Fonze”. Lapras, known as “Air Jordan”, surfed down to Cinnabar Island. At long last, the Helix Fossil was revived bringing Lord Helix the Omanyte into the party. With the new team of six, the team set out to beat the Mansion. This became extremely difficult and the team blacked out right before the key! Determination got the team through, and showed them the way to Blaine. With the help of Anarchy Jesus, Blaine was easily defeated. Finally the seventh badge was won.

Taking the surf route back to Pallet, the team continued North to Viridian City. The next goal was to acquire the eighth gym badge. In theory it sounded fairly easy. Because there was a ledge right beside the gym, it literally took an entire day to get inside and beat Giovanni. Finally through the help of democracy, the eighth badge was obtained. The sights were all sent for Victory Road and the Elite Four. The grind began to train up the Pokemon that were not ready. Although Victory Road had many things that could have proved hard, the team got through safely. A TM for Sky Attack was found and used on Bird Jesus. After some grinding, Helix evolved into Omastar. The team was finally able to get through Victory Road, and reach the Pokemon League.

Using the Elite Four as battle experience, they were able to power level enough to challenge them the final time. Only the fight with Blue remained. This epic battle shook the roots of Kanto. Things started out incredibly well with Zapdos disposing of the imposter Bird Jesus and Alakazam with two swift Thunders. It was then Fonze versus Blue’s Rhydon, but Fonze knowing surf brought the win. Zapdos shot down Arcanine with another deadly Thunder. Next, Blue sent out Exeggutor. Bird Jesus was summoned and his Sky Attack beat Exeguttor no problem. Blue then sent out Blastoise who desposed of Bird Jesus with a Blizzard. It was a devastating blow to the team. Remembering the fallen favorites like Dux and Jay Leno, the team was ready to win. Zapdos was sent out, and defeated Blastoise with one Thundershock. It took sixteen days, seven hours, forty-five minutes, but Red and the community beat the game. Friends were made and lost, bonds were tied, a community was formed, and so was a religion. History had been made, and the first generation of Twitch Plays Pokemon was completed.

I will not be highlighting the future generations, but hope you continue to follow it. Here is to the end of a prosperous week, and I hope you have enjoyed reading both parts. Obtaining a copy of X or Y will be a priority now!

Pokemon X and Y are fantastic, and if nothing else, reading these Twitch summaries has made me want to play Pokemon more than ever.

I should bust out my 3DS… but, you know, work. :/

To this day I’ve never played more than an hour of all Pokemon games combined. Yet I still have a fondness for the franchise that can be attributed to having really liked the anime back in the late 90s. The whole world has always felt like happy anime summer camp.

These “Twitch Plays” have made me go back and replay the classic Pokemon games. It really is interesting to see how the series has grown over time while still maintaining the charm that the first games had. The battle mechanics in the early generations are especially jarring because individual moves were not considered physical or special.
