Editorial Miscellany: Parentheses

And I am proud.

I have done this. I have done this lesson.

Here we are again, LusiPoops. Back at Editorial Miscellany. It is like taking a train to a suburb, one begins to wonder why one put any effort into going to such a dismal place, but staying is just barely more convenient than leaving again. So here we go, the train back home will be arriving in just a few paragraphs.

Pokémon Art Academy

Shut up. I love this game. I am not going to wrap this up in some half-hearted attempt to reasonably justify why I bought and love this game beyond the fact that the Pokémon are cute and I appreciate the drawing tips. I am not a particularly talented artist, but the idea has always appealed to me and so learning even a few of the very basics is valuable to me. It is also helpful that the game encourages players to take their time and also applauds creativity so that players will feel free to experiment even with the iconic images of Pokémon. In fact, there is a NPC that shows her (or his, depending on the gender chosen by the player) drawings at the end of each lesson and while it is clear that the intention is to make the player feel better about his own drawing, the incompetent results have caused me to occasionally laugh out loud.

Fantasy Life

Have not played it since the last time I talked about it and I am feeling good.

The Binding of Isaac

This was one of the “free” games to come with PlayStation Plus this month (I would be far less likely to feel guilty about the service if I was permitted the option to pay for and truly own the games I feel are worth my money. Am I able to do that? If so, I am not very good at look find do. Lusipurr tells me on Twitter that I can, so now I really do feel like I have lost my look find do abilities. Look. Look find do. I feel like this parenthetical thought is going on for far too long) and although I knew about the game and had seen it played, this was my first time actually trying it myself.

Enh.

I mean, I appreciate all the things it is trying to do. I like the challenge and the focus on adaptability and observation in conjunction with twitch skill, and I even enjoy the conceit to some extent, but something about the execution of the gameplay does not sit well with me. Or, rather, it does not compel me. I am not compelled (or I suppose I should say “impelled”, but to this I will defer to the more grammatically pedantic members of the Lusipurr.com community) by it. I will take Rogue Legacy in a second over it.

My love for Rosalina is only trumped by my love for Waluigi.

Rosalina is in the same weight class as Waluigi, but it does not matter.

More Mario Kart More Mario Kart More Mar

Seriously, my girlfriend and I have played it for hours at a time every night and we are still not sick of it. I have moved away from the palatable and forgettable choice of playing as Koopa Troopa on a standard bike and have landed on the horrifying and tremendously irritating choice of playing as Waluigi on Mr. Scooty. Just like Wii Fit Trainer in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (more on that later), there are few people less annoying to lose to than Waluigi in Mario Kart 8. I mean, he is just so obnoxious and horrifying. I hope that Tingle will be a playable character sometime in the future now that the series is allowing for more characters outside of the Mario universe.

Oh right. I have Smash Bros.

And the 3DS version is indeed just the appetizer. The game is no different than my expectations which means that it is the ultimate game to lose hours with friends while playing. The day I received it my brother and two of my friends came over and we played it for six hours straight. It felt like two. The balance feels good, the game looks great, it plays smoothly, and it makes time fly by. Single player, I barely touch the thing. Strangely it is Lucario who appears to be my best character. He was a quaternary character of mine in Brawl (falling in the category of somebody who I liked to play as but did not tend to succeed with) but his moveset is tweaked in just the right way to make him become a secondary character at worst. Sheik is also back to being an actual good character, but it seems like it is at the expense of my effectiveness with both Olimar and ROB the Robot. I still play as ROB. Because robots do not die.

Anyway, I am sure that somebody like Mel would be able to provide far more detailed insight into the game, but the universe is not fair and therefore I have it early and not him. Take that, Mel!

Vagrant Story

I am trying, man. It feels similar to Chrono Trigger for me in that I do not really have anything significantly negative to say about the game, but I am just not able to get myself into it. Even Chrono Trigger pulled me in for the first few hours.

Unfinished Swan

I had bought this on PlayStation 3 and stopped fairly early on at the end of the labyrinth section, feeling like I had seen all there was. I decided to give it a bit more of a shot, and while the gameplay does sort of switch itself up, it does so in a way that makes it less interesting. It appears as though the game used up its most interesting idea at the offset. I actually like the writing, but the narrator’s voice acting is so terrible that it does not matter. No thanks!

Final Thoughts

I guess I played more games this week than I expected, LusiBrats. What have you all played? Games? Video games? Good (I feel like I need at least one more paranthetical thought in here to sort of bookend the whole thing, so here it is. Your train has arrived.) bye.

Binding of Isaac is over-hyped Indie crap, which people who over-hype indie crap bang on about without cessation.

There are lots of negative things to say about Vagrant Story (structurally), and if you had bothered to be on the podcast or had listened to it, you would have heard them! Sluggard!

Precisely where I stopped, for precisely the same reason.

Oh Vagrant story, I have to begin playing that game already, I thought I founded the game but it was just the case with no disc . I will have to get the game by others means ….

Funny, that sounds appealing to me, I used to draw a lot when I was a kid, so much that one time I had to do a drawing for homework, and when my teacher saw it she thought I didn’t do it, it was too good to have been drawn by me she said. I think she thought that because I was 8 years old at that time and it was a FINE drawing of donald duck.

Nothing more to add about the other games since I don’t have a 3ds or a wiiU yet, but it looked fun and interesting to read .

3DS Smash was able to give me a good preview of what they did to change things for the next installment. I can confirm that they really did give Sheik her dangerous qualities back, making her capable of juggling opponents that do not know the basics of how to avoid such a fate. Olimar… yeah he’s been super nerfed. His recovery is better, but everything else is worse. As for ROB, ROB’s a butt and I don’t play with butts. Never liked his slow weird attacks that all come out a useless angles. His projectile game isn’t as good as someone like Link’s or Samus’s (and they made it much worse in Smash 4). He’s got great survivability (like most of the cast in newer Smash games), but I never saw much else in him. Take that, Ethos!

I am happy to use “game” in its expanded definition in conjunction with an expanding form, but strictly, you are correct.

Binding of Isaac is over-hyped Indie crap, which people who over-hype indie crap bang on about without cessation.
This is partly true. There is commendable design from what I saw and it is a cohesive vision, so I wouldn’t call it crap, but it feels to me that at the end of the day people were excited about it because they saw recognizable mechanic tropes wrapped up in a plot that AAA companies would turn down, regardless of the fact that the mechanics were not framed in an interesting way and its plot and conceit is more “dark” than it is particularly interesting.

    Stop playing Mario Kart!
    No way. Great game.

“Had bothered” is interesting word selection!

I think we had talked about this before, and it appears that our instincts were dead on.

@Mel – The more I play Smash for Wii U (and it has been a lot at this point), the more I feel like the experts are going to be slowly changing their pivot points. I think the community is still using Brawl as a point of comparison and as such (in conjunction with the inferior 3DS version) the metagame is very, very young. I know that’s an obvious statement to make, and the analysis you provide is essential in the slow inevitable process of discovering what we’re right about and what we’re wrong about, but I’m not so quick to judge any character yet.

Either way, I never won much with ROB in Brawl and do so even less in the new one, but he’s just too damn fun to play as.

“There is commendable design from what I saw and it is a cohesive vision, so I wouldn’t call it crap,”
I would. And did. Above (see above for above quote above).

“it feels to me that at the end of the day people were excited about it because they saw recognizable mechanic tropes wrapped up in a plot that AAA companies would turn down, regardless of the fact that the mechanics were not framed in an interesting way and its plot and conceit is more “dark” than it is particularly interesting.”
Entirely correct. And hence it is crap. (see above, above above, and above: above above, above (above)).

    “Great game.”
    Disagree.

““Had bothered” is interesting word selection!”
interesting adj. Deliberately provocative and insulting with the intention of antagonising or of inciting angry comment. See also provocateur.

“I think we had talked about this before, and it appears that our instincts were dead on.”
We did, and were (see previous, as above, but before above, above).

The metagame for Smash 4 is not only young but is, for the first time for a Smash title, subject to persistent patches. Already certain “techs” people found have been removed, to varying degrees of understanding and/or outrage. Since I don’t have the (real version of the) game yet and can’t say for certain how this patch has changed things (because Nintendo wants to treat us like children and won’t release patch notes), and since this is only the first balance patch, I’m not going to declare some trend from little or no evidence. We just don’t know yet how Nintendo’s newly begun foray into post-release support of this kind will impact the game.

But it will be a new factor for the Smash community to deal with, of that I am certain.
