Editorial: Pokemon, As Good As Gold

Pika Pika!

Pika Pika!

I have always been baffled by the popularity of Pokemon games. Pokemon is one of those games that will always cost a fair amount of money, even used and even if you are seeking one of the earlier versions. So, much to my dismay, it appears I will never be able to buy Pokemon at a stunningly cheap price for my little sister’s DS. Like Lusipurr said to me the other day, the price of a Pokemon game is more reliable than gold.

But what is it about these games that keep players coming back? Surely, it cannot be the storylines. “Pokemon Trainer Thea heads out to become Pokemon Champion for the 785th time,” does not sound all that exciting. Yet, somehow it is. Pokemon is the only game that I, impatient gamer that I am, can say I have played through more times than I can count on one hand. There is something about the thrill of choosing your first pokemon from the Pokemon Professor and setting out to capture the title of Pokemon Champion, that keeps me coming back for more. Even now, I am contemplating turning on my DS just to polish up my badges and to say hello to my Floatzel, U-Boat.

Go, U-Boat!

Go, U-Boat!

Another draw to the Pokemon series, for me, is its reliability. When I buy the newest version of Pokemon, I know what I expect before I ever start the cartridge. I will get to choose my name, I will get to choose my rivals name, and then after a small crisis in my hometown I will get to choose my first poke-baby (and I get to name him too!). In the DS versions I am able to trade online with people from across the globe, I am able to polish up my badges to the “squeesquee” sound that annoys everyone in the room, and I am able to make Poffins for my little lovelies. It all sounds so gimmicky, but I still enjoy it.

So what is it about Pokemon that you love or hate? Why do you think Pokemon is as popular as it is? And, most importantly, what is your favorite Pokemon?

I cannot choose from near 500! But I love the Ralts trio (the one that finishes in Gardevoir), the Flaaffy trio, and the dark badasses, Umbreon and Absol. And, of course: Lucario. Not just because he’s fun in Super Smash Brothers either.
But I’m with you, Thea. Pokémon is the series in which I sink the most repeated playthroughs and hours into. It is quite astonishing.

I was a big fan of the first “Red” and “Blue” games. In fact I was pretty obsessed with them to the point where I could recite all 150 pokemon (I was much younger then). Then the next versions came out with more pokemon, too many more pokemon (was it 150 more?). I felt my energy for it had been sapped by the knowledge that I would have to learn yet more names and capture yet more pokemon. 150 seemed a perfectly manageable size to me.

Red and Blue shall always be my favorite. I always thought it lost some of the magic when they added the extra Pokemon, they weren’t as cool as the original 150.

    But any way…>_>…<__>…

I wanna be the very best
    Like no one ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause
I will travel across the land
    Searching far and wide
    Teach Pokemon to understand
    The power that’s inside

    Pokemon!
    Gotta catch ‘em all–

    It’s you and me
    I know it’s my destiny

    Pokemon!

    Ooooh, you’re my best friend
In a world we must defend

    Pokemon!
    Gotta catch ‘em all–

    Our hearts so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and I’ll teach you

    Pokemon!
    Gotta catch ‘em all!
    Gotta catch ‘em all!
    Yeeaa.

    Every challenge along the way
    With courage I can face
    I will battle everyday
    To claim my rightful place
Come with me the time is right
    There’s no better team
Arm in arm we’ll win the fight
    It’s always been our dream

    Pokemon!
    Gotta catch ‘em all–

    It’s you and me
    I know it’s my destiny

    Pokemon!

    Ooooh, you’re my best friend
In a world we must defend

    Pokemon!
    Gotta catch ‘em all–

    Our hearts so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and I’ll teach you

    Pokemon!
    Gotta catch ‘em all!
    Gotta catch ‘em all!
    Yeeeaa!

Here have a screamo version of the Pokemon theme. It will make more sense to you later on in life.

Jigglypuff or Purin is my favorite Pokemon by far. I own a backpack which looks like Jigglypuff.

I know it’s nostalgic to think the original 150 Pokémon were the best, but although some of the new ones contain some duds, the original 150 did as well.
    I mean, eggsecute?
The “nido” 6 were kinda dumb as well.
Pokémon like Infernape, Absol, Umbreon, Ampharos, and many more are far more interesting than many in the original 150.
I think Gold and Silver are the best in the series, but Diamond and Pearl were really close. The games still represent some of the best RPG design out there.

There is now an amazing amount of things to see and do in Pokemon. All of the badges take long enough, but now there are contests, berry picking, poffin making, underground exploring and online plaza’s.

Pokemon is the same core gameplay, but for sheer ‘hours per buck’ this title is insane!
