    @Zoltan: What? :o

@Bup: Nothing wrong with Cowboy Bebop, but you should watch Black Butler (the English dub).

    Everyone should watch Black Butler.

    Everyone.

I enjoyed listening to the reasoning behind the introduction of the reviews (and was surprised when I learned it sprung up out of my irritation with Aniplex’s bullshit pricing). More importantly, I enjoyed the insight on why review scores fall into a pattern that echo school gradings. That never would have occurred to me otherwise, and it -does- make sense.

Re: Kill la Kill. This show is not going to adhere to whatever expectations you have for it. It’s aware that it’s a cartoon and it’s going to play on that. The animation quality will bounce all over the place, but it will never fail to be entertaining. It also has one of the best dubs I’ve ever heard. But that price (and Aniplex) can go to hell.

After listening to this episode I found myself wondering what my criteria for a good anime is. By and large, I believe that anime is largely either of bad quality or average quality, with some real gems pushing the whole industry forwards (I guess you could look at gaming in the same fashion).

What separates the average from the quality differs from person to person and depends on what tropes/concepts/ideas/fetishes/themes the individual viewer resonates with. Of course, there are those quality shows that truly shine and hold universal appeal on the merits of just being sincerely good. But those are the exception, not the rule.

Re: Nintendo. What more can be said? They’re the gift that keeps on giving for those of us who enjoy watching their increasingly frustrating/amusing antics.

Great show guys. Look forward to the upcoming anime posts, as well as the scored game reviews.

I’m all for the grading review system. The way Lusipurr explained it was very clear and very well said.

@Wolfe: I think there’s a lot more to what makes a good anime than one’s affinity for the topic. Certainly people will appreciate works more if they are centred on something interesting to them, but this is true of movies, too, and music, and most art. But there are also key aesthetic matters which have nothing to do with topicality, and these are also a significant factor.

For example, I think Serial Experiments Lain is a great anime, but I really don’t like it. I think its pseudophilosophical conceits are juvenile. But its aesthetics are masterfully done and the narrative deployment of its story is brilliant. It’s not personally very fulfilling to me, but that doesn’t make it a bad anime by any measure. I often recommend it to people with the proviso that it thinks its ruminations are much smarter than they are.

Dancing Matt said that the Wii U could have been the end-all be-all of Nintendo systems–availability of all past Nintendo games, a one-stop shop for all things Nintendo. Had they done that and marketted it as being that at the $300 price point, I strongly believe that they would be competing with the PS4 in terms of sales.

Instead, they fucked right off and sat on their hands and dithered and hemmed and hawed and made excuse after excuse after excuse. And now they’re ready to chuck the whole thing into the sea for a grab at more mobile market share. Nice work, Iwata. You didn’t just kill the goose that laid the golden egg–you smashed the eggs, disemboweled the goose, and hanged Nintendo with the entrails. Brilliant.

Ah, Blue Dragon, who can forget the year that game was released? Is the same year Oliver Motok was born! and there was a time when he and Ethos were ( according to them) Defenders of the tales games! ( but that was during the catfancy time line, before lusipurr.com was born) good times, good times .

Indeed laughter yoga is dumb, that is why describing that as a room of Tidus and Yunas is accurate .

    Site Policy Changes
    -Covering Anime
I’ll have more comments on this change once I see any coverage of it. It would have been nice to launch the change with an article about it. I haven’t seriously watched any anime in years (aside from a brief stint watching Madoka Magicka) and I’d be interested in hearing a bit about it beside the normal stuff.

    -Scores
hmm. I guess this could be interesting.

    -New Tag Line / Banner
I guess the new tag is descriptive but I prefer the old picture. I don’t really like the dour Lestat-looking guy who now occupies the banner.

    New Releases
    None covered this week

    NEWS
    Aniplex prices/piracy
I would think that Aniplex wouldn’t be able to sustain that kind of pricing model. Are the shows that they have the rights to so good that people will pay for it?

Nintendo Conference Call / Nintendo bad E3
If partners means retailers then it really IS important that they liked Nintendo’s stuff and are willing to buy it to sell and market.
    Virtual Console whining
It might actually be worthwhile to pull devs over to VC (if it really does require that) so that Nintendo could leverage one of its greatest strengths: its amazing back catalog.

    Nintendo Early Access
I don’t get why any company would want to do this. Demos and Early Access are awesome for consumers but basically outright awful for companies.

    Digital/physical Pricing at Nintendo
This is one of those cases where Nintendo would be better just not saying anything. Come to think of it, that’s most of the time lately.

NX not aiming to compete with PS4 on Hardware
This strategy will only work if Nintendo can attract developers to make enough games to keep their system going. That has yet to ever be the case.

    Bup Talk
    Game for virtual console
    Bup sounds different this week.

    Imitanis Gaming Moment
@Lusi: (RE:PoR) Can’t you buy those items back from the in-game store? I thought that the merchant just kept anything that you sold to him.

I honestly can’t think of any games that I played this week. I have been busy attempting to keep my lawn and hydrangeas alive in the unseasonably warm weather, cleaning out plugged dryer ducts and working extra hours. Sorry!

    DiceAdmiral Travel Moment
I traveled to various Barnes & Nobles in the local area to hit up their Red Dot Clearance looking for board games. I found a copy of Krosmaster Arena and a few extra hero packs for it.

    Final Notes
Back to the old intro music? I can’t keep track of the podcast format changes.

Fixing link text: I believe that the problem I found was in one of your CSS files but I’d have to look again. I wish I did remember because it is damn annoying for the links to be hidden.

    @Raid Ace:
It would have been nice to launch the change with an article about it.
We no longer do site announcement posts unless it is a really significant, stop-the-presses matter. Increasing our coverage so that we officially rather than tacitly include anime is not the sort of thing that should be cluttering the index and pushing our actual coverage further down the page.

I guess this could be interesting.
If you don’t like them, my suggestion is that you scroll past the graphic at the end of a review.

I prefer the old picture. I don’t really like the dour Lestat-looking guy who now occupies the banner.
That’s ME, you jackass. Also, Lestat has yellow-blonde hair. And he’s anything but dour. He wouldn’t wear all black except to be ironic and satirical!

Are the shows that they have the rights to so good that people will pay for it?
I certainly don’t think so. And, at prices that high, even if the products are good, people will just pirate them instead. This is one of the key points I made during our discussion of piracy: Aniplex are now actually pushing into piracy people who want to buy their products, but who cannot afford so to do because of how unreasonable Aniplex’s pricing is. Contrast this with Funimation, who are also viciously anti-piracy, but who sell their products at very fair and reasonable prices. Funimation has seen explosive growth and is doing a brisk business with some of the best properties in anime. From what I understand, Aniplex is going nowhere, and their sales figures are not increasing at an appreciable rate. Given the choice of licensing your property to one or the other, its an easy choice: go for the biggest audience and the fastest sales. Funimation wins, Aniplex loses. And consumers win, too. Fair prices beat unfair prices.

It might actually be worthwhile to pull devs over to VC (if it really does require that) so that Nintendo could leverage one of its greatest strengths: its amazing back catalog.
    Might?

This is one of those cases where Nintendo would be better just not saying anything.
    Iwata Don’t Care

    Bup sounds different this week.
I have no idea what you are talking about or why that would be the case.

Can’t you buy those items back from the in-game store? I thought that the merchant just kept anything that you sold to him.
Nope. He only sells the things he sells. Items you sell to him do not appear in his in-game store unless they are on his list of items that he can sell. And he can’t sell many things that are only found (not dropped from enemies) in the castle, like the Nun set for Charlotte. It’s a very stupid system.

    hydrangeas
    Why not orchids?

I can’t keep track of the podcast format changes.
I am doing this specifically to annoy you. Next week, we’ll begin with the outro and end with the intro. The music will just be a collection of Bup fart noises overlaid on top of a baby’s cries.

    “I have a rub-rick” Lusipurr
That is a bad habit that I have picked up from my colleagues who mispronounce it in that way. Before I arrived where I am now, I pronounced it properly.
