Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Activision and Infinity Ward blow gamers away with the newest addition of the Call of Duty franchise: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Modern day fishing.

Modern Warfare 2 places players in the shoes of various British and American soldiers in a fictional war set in the near future.  There are multiple amazing aspects to this game, including the graphics, storyline and presentation, and actual gameplay.  There are only a couple negative parts to the game, but these are extremely overshadowed by the positive.

The first good thing is how well done the graphics and character details are in the game.  Character models, even on the generic AI enemies or allies, look extremely realistic, all the way down to the clothing they are wearing.  This is most apparent during an early level set on an icy mountain, where the player’s AI teammate has frost forming in his beard during the entire mission.  This helps draw the player into the game’s world, which is helped even more by the drama in the game’s writing and cutscenes.  Multiple scenes will have the player’s jaw drop or the player will start feeling for the characters involved in this conflict.  Like previous incarnations of Call of Duty, the actual gameplay is incredibly well done.  The shooting and aiming is tight, and the controls are very easy to pick up.  The controls flow seamlessly between normal on-foot gameplay and the few vehicle combat parts of the game.  It is important to note that like other games in the series, the multiplayer mode is among the best on the market today.

The only major downfall to the game is the lack of co-op in the main story.  There are elements of it in a mode called “Special Ops”, which involves honing one’s skills to finish special missions faster and better, but that is about it.  The only other bad part of the game is that there is not much “catching up” of the last Modern Warfare’s story.  This is unfortunate, as many of the best parts of Modern Warfare 2’s story are directly linked to events in the first of the series.

Awesome game? Check. Dumb hair? Check.

Modern Warfare 2 is an extremely good FPS.  The graphics and character details are incredible to look at, and the gameplay and shooting is by far among the best of recent years.  While the story is incredible, new players of the series may not get the full effect of some of the dramatic turns.  The lack of a full co-op mode is more than made up for by how amazing the rest of the game is.  For anyone looking for a good FPS, this is a sure bet.

The story is mediocre. You’re paying for the multiplayer, and as far as I’m concerned a map pack with an expansion for COD4 would’ve done the same damn thing.

I played a bit of the Special Ops horde-mode equivalent with my brother this past weekend and, while it was fun, I don’t think CoD6 will replace TF2 for my multiplayer shooter needs. I’m sure I’ll play it on a few occasions and, like CoD4, I’ll enjoy it, but if I’m going to sit down and play something, I’m much more likely to fire up TF2 (or Halo if friends are around). The game does look and feel very polished, but I haven’t played nearly enough of either to tell how much content was actually added between this game and CoD4, though.

I’m surprised at how little heat this game is taking from the media. people are jumping on it but after the whole “virtual orgasmic rape” fiasco I was expecting torches and pitchforks. I guess I’ll never get the media…

    good review.

Ehh, I think the main reason is that sex makes for a better controversy than violence. I’ll never understand why. Probably the same reason you can commit mass-murder and get a PG-13 rating, but show a nipple and it’s almost instant R (or, even weirder, say “Fuck” twice and you’ve got an R).

It’s really weird, under some ratings systems it’s the exact opposite …

See, when I was playing the game I felt that the terrorist level was completely relevant to the plot, so I had no problems with it being there.

Oh yeah and one more cheapshot. Call Of Duty is becoming the new Madden. New game every year. The should make the CD out of toilet paper because it’s only gonna be good for wiping our asses if this trend keeps up.

Underdog, I’d agree if they started making BAD games.

    @Breaka666- Like Germany.

@Underdog- I kind of agree to an extent, but at least CoD has two dev teams, so that games get two years of development each, and if Kotaku is to be believed then Activision is looking to add another CoD development studio.

@SN/UD/Bup: If they keep making good games, then yeah, go ahead and put out a new one every year. The most frequent complaint I’ve heard about CoD6, though, is that it suffers from Madden Syndrome, where it’s more incremental updates than a groundbreaking new game. If there’s a market for it, though, I say they go nuts (like I said above, haven’t played nearly enough of either to say if there’s any merit to this claim).

I certainly didn’t pay for the multiplayer. I loved the campaign, and have no regrets paying $60 for it.

Multiplayer is fun, and I won’t try to deny that it’s the main course for most gamers, but I wouldn’t have bought the game if it didn’t feature a new story :P
