Activision and Infinity Ward blow gamers away with the newest addition of the Call of Duty franchise: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Modern Warfare 2 places players in the shoes of various British and American soldiers in a fictional war set in the near future. There are multiple amazing aspects to this game, including the graphics, storyline and presentation, and actual gameplay. There are only a couple negative parts to the game, but these are extremely overshadowed by the positive.
The first good thing is how well done the graphics and character details are in the game. Character models, even on the generic AI enemies or allies, look extremely realistic, all the way down to the clothing they are wearing. This is most apparent during an early level set on an icy mountain, where the player’s AI teammate has frost forming in his beard during the entire mission. This helps draw the player into the game’s world, which is helped even more by the drama in the game’s writing and cutscenes. Multiple scenes will have the player’s jaw drop or the player will start feeling for the characters involved in this conflict. Like previous incarnations of Call of Duty, the actual gameplay is incredibly well done. The shooting and aiming is tight, and the controls are very easy to pick up. The controls flow seamlessly between normal on-foot gameplay and the few vehicle combat parts of the game. It is important to note that like other games in the series, the multiplayer mode is among the best on the market today.
The only major downfall to the game is the lack of co-op in the main story. There are elements of it in a mode called “Special Ops”, which involves honing one’s skills to finish special missions faster and better, but that is about it. The only other bad part of the game is that there is not much “catching up” of the last Modern Warfare’s story. This is unfortunate, as many of the best parts of Modern Warfare 2’s story are directly linked to events in the first of the series.
Modern Warfare 2 is an extremely good FPS. The graphics and character details are incredible to look at, and the gameplay and shooting is by far among the best of recent years. While the story is incredible, new players of the series may not get the full effect of some of the dramatic turns. The lack of a full co-op mode is more than made up for by how amazing the rest of the game is. For anyone looking for a good FPS, this is a sure bet.
