Square Enix Inc. has released a trailer this week for their new loot hunting game Heroes of Ruin. The video showcases how the game looks in motion, as well as giving a taste of each of the four classes.
Heroes of Ruin is a dungeon crawling and area exploring game with up to four player drop in, drop out cooperative play. The player chooses between the four customizable classes: the Vindicator, the Gunslinger, the Alchitect, and the Savage. Enemies, of which there are over two hundred types, scale to the number of players. Square Enix promises that even characters of vastly different levels will be able to play together without significantly hindering one of them.
The designers promise that the game will offer a unique experience to every player, every day. Areas are randomly generated for each player, as well as when they are revisited within one’s own save file. Further, “Daily Challenges” are varied and rewarding tasks for gamers willing to try them. These are available for download using the SpotPass service on the 3DS.
As of this writing, Square Enix has presented little information for the Alchitect and Savage beyond “spell caster” and “fist weapon user;” however, the Vindicator and Gunslinger have both been profiled on their site. The Vindicator is similar to a knight errant: brave and honorable, it is a front line fighter capable of wielding heavy blades. The Gunslinger, by contrast, is a light and evasive criminal specializing in ranged combat. The artwork of the characters is by Adi Granov, a Marvel artist known for his cover art and helping design the Iron Man suit from Jon Favreau’s Iron Man.
The story of Heroes of Ruin takes place in Nexus, a city whose Lord Ataraxis has fallen terribly ill. As a mercenary, the player is promised vast rewards for finding a cure. Of course, not all is as it seems, and the illness may have sinister origins. Players are expected to enjoy both the combat experience and the story equally.
