My name is pronounced My-kel. Not Micheal. Now that that is out of the way I will talk a little about myself.
I was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I had an atypical education in that instead of going to a traditional high school; I attended Horry Georgetown Technical College along with a few others in the Early College High School Program. As a result of this I obtained my high school diploma and associate’s degree at the same time. “What does this have to do with games?”, you ask? “Because I like to brag”, I answer. I am currently attending Coastal Carolina University and majoring in Computer Science. I am also tutoring the next generation of the ECHS at HGTC.
But enough of all that, let us talk about games. My earliest memory of me playing a game is when I was maybe seven. I remember the sound of the Fugees, the vague scent of what I now know as weed (I was in my brother’s room), and I was messing up mushrooms with Mario’s booty cheeks of steel. To this day whenever I hear Read or Not, I get flashbacks of running the hell away from that crazy ass sun. Other early influences worth mentioning include Pokemon, Silent Bomber, Saga 2 (most would remember it as Final Fantasy Legend 2), and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Early in my life my favorite genre by far was JRPGs, though I did not understand why until later. On a very base level, what I love most about games is that I am given a set of rules and then it is up to my own ingenuity to discover the best way to work with those rules to attain an end. Because of this I tend to gravitate towards games with absurd battle systems with very little basis in reality, hence my love of JRPGs. Some readers may remember that my favorite developer is Tri-Ace and this is why. If you want a whacked out battle system that will take a while to figure out, one need not look further then them.
Sadly, I have become disenfranchised with JRPGs lately. Fighting the same enemy formations over and over again, the grinding, the random encounters, and a truly unnecessary tendency to stick to tradition made me gravitate towards action and fighting games like Blazblue, Devil May Cry, and Ninja Gaiden. Recently, thanks to being poor, I have been watching and reading about games more than playing them. But honestly, I find that just as enjoyable. Games that I have been watching lately are Akai Katana, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower, Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy Gaiden, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Gun Valkyrie, Touhou 13: ten Desires, Touhou 12.3 hioutensoku, The 3rd Birthday, and quite a few more.
And that’s me in a nutshell. I am happy to be on board.
