Editorial: Everyone Hates Capcom Now

But, Engineer, that is what you always say!

Will they be releasing Mega Man Legends 3?

Good day to you, Lusipeons! I appear before you once again to bring you words of doom and despair. Doom! Despair! Now that that is out of the way, I would like to discuss with you the subject of the company Capcom. Capcom, a gaming company from the early 1980s, is well known for game series such as Mega Man, Street Fighter, Ace Attorney, and Resident Evil. Recently, however, Capcom has left its normally enthusiastic fans with a great deal of resentment toward the company. The reasons for this rancor are twofold; Capcom has cancelled the Mega Man Legends 3 project, and the company is preparing to release Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Fans were incredibly excited when Capcom announced in September 2010 that they would be developing Mega Man Legends 3 for the Nintendo 3DS. The company opened a devroom blog to allow fans the ability to follow the development team’s progress and offer their feedback. They even announced that a beta test version of the game, Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype, would be made available through Nintendo’s eShop service. On July 18, 2011, the game was abruptly cancelled. The cancellation was announced through a post on the devroom blog, which stated that the game was cancelled because “it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria”. The announcement further stated that the Prototype would not be made available, and that the level of fan-developer interaction that the devroom blog provided would not be pursued by the company in the near future. Understandably, fans were outraged. They had much to say about how they would be unwilling to buy Capcom products in the future, how they had lost faith in the company, how the companies’ executives should eat until they fatten themselves to the point where their culture would not accept them, how Japanese people are horrible and incompetent managers, and how Capcom’s executives should penetrate their bodily orifices with various uncomfortably large phallic objects.

Objections?

Also, the game will have the Ace Attorney in it.

Wait…what? Anger with the company, I can accept. It is perfectly understandable that fans are angry and disappointed, and equally understandable that they do not wish to buy products from the company again. Blatant racism, though? Vulgar suggestions? Honestly, people, it is just a game. Many are complaining that they waited ten years for this game, but many of those years were spent listening to Capcom executives denying that they would ever make it. Some would suggest that this sort of behavior is typical of people on the internet, and I suppose that it is. But I certainly do not blame Capcom for no longer wanting fans to be deeply involved in the development of its games.

I do not profess to know the reason Capcom’s executives decided to cancel development of Mega Man Legends 3. My best guess is that the decision was either financial or legal. Executives do not make decisions for no reason. This decision may have been a poor one, but it will certainly not kill Capcom as a company. Capcom has almost a dozen other high-grossing brands, and I doubt that the end of Mega Man will spell the end of Ace Attorney, Street Fighter, or Resident Evil. Fan uproar will eventually subside and fans will then divide themselves into groups that will still buy further Capcom products and groups that will not. I think, disgruntled fans, that your energy is wasted heckling Capcom. The quicker you move on to bigger and better things, the happier you will be. There are other things to look forward to in gaming, like the ever-present and ever-free updates for the now-and-forever-free Team Fortress 2!

The second source of fan disillusionment with Capcom is the upcoming Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Announced barely a week ago at the 2011 Comic-Con, Capcom promises that the game will have 12 new characters,”enhanced gameplay”, and a fan-requested online spectator mode, which was not included in Marvel vs Capcom 3. It will retail for $39.99. Fans are very upset with this game and its price tag, stating that it is nothing more than a glorified DLC pack. I will, for the moment, disagree. Capcom has not yet announced what all of the enhanced gameplay mechanics that it is including will be, so it is very possible that Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will feel like it is worth forty dollars. I think it would be best to wait and see what the game looks like when it is finished before judging it. I believe that the backlash for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is largely a byproduct of the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3. I predict that Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be a fine standalone game, and that fans will realize this once the uproar over the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 has subsided a bit.

What do you think, readers? Should Capcom, as its fans suggest, dismantle itself, kill all its executives, and destroy the entire culture of Japan? Are fans just overreacting? What are your thoughts on Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3?

UMvC3 is a glorified expansion pack, but people will still buy it in droves. Canceling MML3 was a terrible PR move and Capcom has lost a lot of fan respect for it.

Any price you pay for a fighting game is worth it. Take your total amount of fights in your fighting game of choice, multiply your fight loses by 1$(the average price of the arcades in Japan) and you’ll have the amount of money you would spend on said fighting game in the arcades. Chances are, that 40$ price tag will be much, much cheaper than what you would spend in arcades in the long run.

The Capcom resentment has been boiling up for a while now. The contants releases of Street Fighter IV in less than a year of the previous version. The constant abuse of DLC including the infamous unlock code already on the disc for RE5. The cancellation of Megaman Universe, first dick move againts the Megaman fanbase.

Then we have them refusing to bring over Ace Attorney Investigations 2, game that you curiously mentioned as one of their main franchises, because it’s not worth their while. Then they go and cancel MML3 which people have been waiting for years to play, dick move number 2 againts the Megaman fanbase. After that they go and announce UMvsC 3 less than a year after the first game, refuse to make it DLC and announce day one DLC for it when the game is not even out.

To top it off, even though Megaman X topped the list by a huge margin on the more requested character to include in MvsC 3, both in Capcom’s Japan’s and NA’s OFFICIAL site, they go and add every top other character in the request list EXCEPT Megaman X and then lie to our faces and say there wasn’t much fan support for thim. Dick move againts Megaman fanbase number 3 with a blatant lie as a bonus, dick move number 3+ if you may.

So you see, its more than meets the eye. I should add how savegely they’re whoring the RE franchise here and there as well as the very fan shunned DmC reboot, but I honestly don’t care much about RE and just will ignore that Twilight infused DmC reboot exists.

In the end, its Capcom’s complete disregard of the fanbase of their most beloved franchise and overall money grubbing attitute over the last couple of years that has exploted in the RAGE of teh internetz. Certainly its more than just because of the cancellation of MML3.

Arcades are long dead, buried, dug up, beaten like a metaphorical horse, and finally the corpse was salted and burned. The steal-your-quarters games of my childhood are long gone, and really aside from the final bosses who still spam some overpowered special attack over and over fighting games really show no arcade pedigree.

Personally, I find the pricing of new releases at $60 as obnoxious, particularly when there’s three or four $15 DLC add-ons that you basically need to buy if you’re going to play with your friends. So seeing a $40 updated rerelease of a fighting game a year later doesn’t offend me. They added about twelve characters, rebalanced everything (because it’s impossible to ship a well balanaced fighter with lots of characters short of some huge public beta), and apparently added some modes or something.

I’d prefer to see a game that’s reasonably priced with free updates that follow like we used to see on PC in the early 2000s (Ok, Valve excluded) with things like Unreal Tournament where it shipped pretty barebones, but you ended up getting map packs, new modes, character models, and tons of other shit for free.

I personally don’t care they cancelled Mega Man Legends 3. I was intrigued by the previous two, but never got to play them. I enjoyed the classic NES ones and beat the first four. I think they were just limited runs or something and I never had money to get them while they were on the shelves back in the day.

Really if people want to shit on Capcom, then I think they should focus on the single, unwipeable save file with Resident Evil Mercenaries 3DS. They have the balls to package some optional sidestory mode that I never even bothered with in RE4 and RE5 as a standalone title, and then they don’t let you start over, ever. What kind of shit is that?

Capcom probably made the right decision to cancel Legends from the point of view of games sales. It might make for a terrible PR gaff, but that is preferable to the expensive proposition than developing a fully featured niche game for a vocal minority.

Capcom never brought Megaman into the 3D generation in a way that maintained its fanbase – and the Legends fanbase is but a fragment of of the overall series fanbase. I think Capcom should just stick to making retro MM titles for PSN.

@SiliconNooB I’ve been wondering about that. I don’t know for sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Mega Man Legends 3 fanbase was like the people who follow Fred Phelps: Few in number, but very loud, and believing that they’re the only people in the world that matter.

Companies don’t make these sorts of decisions for no reason, and I have to believe that Capcom has a good one for cancelling a game that so many loud people wanted. As I said in the editorial, I’m guessing that they either had a good financial reason or a good legal reason to shut down work on the project. The fact that they won’t allow people to download the demo says to me that they’re trying to break people of the idea completely so that they do not get their hopes up and wait 10 more years for the game again. They waited 10 years the first time, though, even after the company announced several times that they had no plans to make it, so I’m willing to bet that fans won’t take this seriously either. Two years from now, they will be sending letters to Capcom asking if they are going to continue development on Mega Man Legends 3 again anytime soon.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Slab. Legends fans are very ‘special’ people, who probably shouldn’t be encouraged – or even approached – unless under heavy sedation.
