To ever argue in favour of Nintendo, it’s important to see motion controls as what they are. Perhaps good for keeping Nintendo alive in the long run, and a boon to a small number of games, but ultimately a hit in good game design in the short term, and an unneeded boost to Nintendo’s hubris and greed.

For many people it would now make more sense to wait it out and pick up a unit for cheap when it’s being phased out at the end of next year, else pick up an NX if that happens to be backwards compatible…

I love that you called it what it is, here, because I STILL see far too many people online speaking of how revolutionary it is. It was, perhaps, for a minute, and that is all. Even the Kinect has essentially become nothing more than the glass eye of Hal, waiting for instructions, and possibly a chance at homicide. This is a donkey that Nintendo apologists love to whip, perhaps with the tassel of a Wiimote, and it doesn’t even seem to be bothered enough to bray anymore.

If it were made by another company, I would suggest that they might be holding out until E3. But because this is Nintendo, that seems very unlikely.

Be afraid.

Not only does my ideal console already have 3 games I WANT and can’t find elsewhere/wouldn’t want to play elsewhere, but it should also have something to look forward to on the horizon. With Zelda out of the picture this year, there’s not a heck of a lot left to get excited about beyond the promise of Splatoon and whatever Star Fox is going to become. (It dawns on me that we have NO info on that game. Is it even going to be a rail-shooter? Which characters are in the game? Will there be multiplayer of ANY sort? This really can’t get delayed, although I wonder if history will show that it was released too early)

Those games are charged with filling a section on the release schedule, and without their performance Nintendo’s console only looks the worse for wear.”

This is an excellent point, and one often overlooked. It is symptomatic of Nintendo’s light schedule as a whole. With so few games on the calendar, each one needs to be a hit, or else there’s a giant gap between satisfying games for console owners. If Splatoon is a damp squib, and the next major success turns out to be StarFox or even Zelda, that would be a year or more between successful game launches–unacceptable when the console itself is retailing at $350.
