New stages, new characters, quite a bit of stuff. I may have to re-mod my Wii just to check it out.

lol maybe we should attempt to play Brawl online. The lag would probably be horrendous…

All I remember from that entire end section is that it was horrible and terribly drawn out. I do agree that things are smoother in Brawl, but I enjoyed the unforgiving aspects of Melee as well. I think the best thing to do for the upcoming games would be splitting the multiplayer mode. Have one focused on competitive play and one focused on the “wacky couch-multiplayer” play. The competitive mode would have limited options while anything and everything should be optional for the other mode.

Have you used “Project M” at all? Your article made me want to dust the Wii off so I could play some Melee and Brawl.

The overall control of Brawl is smoother and much more fluid. In Melee, things are much more rigid and unforgiving, timing has to be more exact. “Project M”, which extensively mods Brawl to play more like Melee is a really nice mash-up of the two games. The newer refined controls of Brawl mixed with the competition-friendly mechanics and physics of Melee.

For me, the next Smash needs to be BOTH a fun and wacky party game as well as competitive for me to really love it. I’m very much ok with Smash having components in it that allow for randomness and wacky couch-multiplayer fun (even tripping!), as long as those things are optional. The people who want it can have it, it’s their game too. But so long as they’re optional things, then I’m happy.

My ideal Smash would have a robust online component, a reasonably balanced roster (no Smash game has had this yet), lots of options for fun diversions and weird stuff, lots of control options (Brawl was a step in the right direction for this with its ability to turn off tap-jumping).

The simplified controls for the series functions much better in a faster experience, something that Brawl proved with all of the gameplay tweaks it introduced. As long as they get rid of the motherfucking tripping, I’ll be happy.

I have several that are only good for smash anymore because most of the other buttons don’t work.

But I share your worry about the new controllers being well suited for smash. Most importantly, I think, will be the new positioning of the second analog stick (or c-stick on the GameCube), as that little nubbin was absolutely critical for nailing properly timed short-hopped aerials since it wouldn’t influence your directional movement like using the left analog stick would.

I think I’m done playing brawl now that I’ve transferred my save to Wii U and can no longer use my wavebird with it. I wonder if the classic pro controller will work decently for it. Smash bros is so centered around the A button that I don’t really see the smaller buttons typical of most controllers being a better fit for the Smash style fighting game.
