D&D’s Dave Arneson Dies Aged 61

Dave Arneson, who in 1974 co-created the Dungeons and Dragons games along with the late Gary Gygax, died on Tuesday at the age of 61. Mr. Arneson had been struggling with cancer for several years. He is reported to have passed away quietly and in his sleep at a hospice in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Dungeons & Dragons and its precursor, Blackmoor, are the basis upon which modern role-playing games–whether of the table-top or digital variety–are built. The deaths of Gygax (in March of 2008) and Arneson are an emotional blow to the industry and to lovers of the genre. Indeed, Lusipurr.com would certainly not exist if it were not for the efforts of these two creative giants.

Therefore, the staff wish to extend their sympathies to the family of Dave Arneson. We are here because of him, and we salute him and the marvelous worlds he created–and the way in which he gave us the tools to create our own worlds. He is responsible for countless hours of enjoyment, and the world is a better place because of him.
