Nintendo has revealed some new information about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword‘s plot and characters. The Wii Remote Plus controlled game will feature Link and Zelda as childhood friends, still in school. Nintendo expects the game to provide a backstory for other events in the series, as well as fleshing out the relationship between the two protagonists.
The game’s storyline starts in the town of Skyloft, which floats on a rock in the air. Link, currently a schoolkid, is about to compete in a bird-flying competition. The winner participates in a special ceremony, which includes Zelda. Link’s schoolyard nemesis, Groose, threatens both to win the race and disrupt Link’s relationship with Zelda. These events are overseen by Gaepora, Zelda’s father and headmaster of Link’s as of yet unnamed school. In the plot, Gaepora also serves as a storyteller.
Link also encounters Fi, the spirit of the powerful Goddess Sword. Fi offers advice to Link throughout his adventures, making her a crucial part of the plot. According to Nintendo, this plot will “lay the foundation” for the rest of the games in the series. As such, Fi will guide Link into creating or helping to create the Master Sword.
Nintendo has not yet released more information, but promises that there will be more details as the release date draws near. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be available November 20th on the Wii. Check back with Blitzmage’s post here for more information.
