Editorial: Beauties of the West

A few days ago, Ethos presented us his favorite video game girls, and it was a fine, fapable list. However, his focus on JRPG girls has left quite a few hotties under-represented. Today, I wanna show some love to the hotness that exists beyond the narrow confines of Japan. No real preferences, just showing off the sex appeal. Let’s begin!

Fancy some tea?

Fancy some tea?

Of course, it’s hard to talk about video game hotness without mentioning Lara Croft. While her proportions were somewhat silly in the PlayStation original games, the technology of today has given us a lara that is athletic, muscular, leggy, and with more than enough bust to grab onto without it interfering with her work. However, what sets her apart is that, unlike most heroes in gaming, Lara isn’t a harsh, warrior ruffian, but rather a refined, elegant lady. She’s a well-trained martial artist and expert marksman, but also well versed in many languages, though she speaks the Queen’s English rather than an American dialect, and very rarely feels the need to raise her voice.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have Heavenly Sword’s Nariko, who is part of a nomadic tribe seeking to guard the Heavenly Sword. Rather than being a refined woman like Lara, Nariko is hardened, angry woman, no doubt from being raised around a tribe that views her as the harbinger of destruction. When her tribe is set upon by the armies of a wicked emperor, she sacrifices herself by wielding the Heavenly Sword, which drains the life of its user. And wield it she does. No matter what form the sword takes, Nariko slices and dices her enemies up in a beautiful dance of death, each movement blessed with a lethal elegance, making her as beautiful as she is deadly.

Ms. Dark if you're nasty.

Being a fan of the Xbox platforms, I’d be remiss in not mentioning the undeniably attractive Joanna Dark. Now Joanna’s an interesting character, drop-dead gorgeous and yet preferring not to be seen. Where most of the women here are in-your-face fighting gals who approach their dangers head-on, Joanna prefers to be the secretive type, functioning best when unseen. Of course, if she has to blow something up old-school style, she’s up to it, but she’s more successful skulking about the shadows, hacking doors and computers, sniping from a distance with silenced guns, or blending into a crowd, looking like she belongs, even when she doesn’t. Her gymnast body makes is easy to leap and crawl under, in between and over security beams. She’s a good looker, and brings the party when the lights go out.

Next, Faith from Mirror’s Edge. Rather than being bouncy and busty, she’s lithe and athletic, small and tight in all the right places, and incredibly flexible. Rather than fighting, Faith makes her living running about the rooftops of a city with enough high-rises to make New York blush. With life and death hanging on every jump and every grab, it’s impossible to live long without being able to slide, shimmy and push oneself about in tight places, and Faith is more than able to. Her body is smooth, silky, and probably good for many different positions.

Makeup? She don't need no stinking makeup!

Lastly, we have Alyx Vance. Make no mistake; she’s not a model. She doesn’t wear revealing gear, and what can be seen is hard, marred by years of war and oppression. However, she’s got a charm about her that is undeniable. Her basic attire and short-cut hair give her a tomboyish appeal, but it’s that face of hers, the depth of her emotion, the pained look in her eyes, that’s what clinches her spot here. She doesn’t wear sexiness on her sleeve or try to act saucy, and it’s the fact that she doesn’t try to be sexy that in fact makes her sexy. She’d likely be more of a long-term, meaningful lover than a sex doll.

I could likely go on all day, as there are many sweet, sweet beauties in western games. However, as this post must end at some point, it will end now. So, do you guys have any favorite ladies of the West? Share your opinions here!

    NIiiice call, MC!
Also a great call with Alex. That’s one that I might have mentioned had I remembered.
Either way, it’s great that it worked out to ladies of the east and west.
I’ll even pretend it was pre-planned and pat us on the back!

Alyx and Faith are undeniably hot. Noriko gets pass marks, Joanna an Lara not so much (there’s something about Lara’s character design that just feels drab and generic). Elena from Uncharted definitely should have made the list.

Oddly I found Noriko’s strange semi-retarded catgirl sister quite attractive ………. don’t know what that says about me ………

SN – I’m with you on Lara, although I guess she’s more of a symbol at this point.

@SN – I dunno, man. That cat-girl was WAY too loli for my tastes. Nariko had the whole Red Sonya thing going on, though, I could dig that more. Lara, though, I could see where she could be off-putting to some, as she practically screams “chick Indy.”

She seemed a little bit cliche, I still give her a pass. It’s not like I’d kick her out of bed if she farted …… which is a good thing really since she’d probably break my arm.

SN is right, Elena should be on this list.

I think the reason Laura’s character seems “generic” as SN puts is is just because, at this point, she is. I mean she’s been around for so long and there’ve been so many rip offs of her that “generic” is probably the best way to describe the idea of Laura Croft, if not the character. I think Eidos (do they own the Tomb Raider IP? I should know that, shouldn’t I) kind of dropped the ball on keeping her character ahead of the industry, and now she’s just kind of there for the sake of her legacy more than her actual incarnation, if that makes any sense.

All in all, though, great list. I think Elena is the only one I would have included on the list that wasn’t there. I can’t speak for cat-girl, since I still haven’t played Heavenly Sword (I’ll probably pick it up once it gets cheap). Next in the series, Thea should do a “beefcake” edition.

@Gibblet – The Tomb Raider IP is indeed owned by Eidos (and now Square Enix by extension). Much of the problem was with Eidos pushing Core Design a tad too hard when the series was at its most popular. Indeed, Tomb Raider serves as a cautionary tale about milking a franchise too aggressively. The series has been better cared for by Crystal Dynamics, however, as all three of their Tomb Raider games have at least been positively received, even if people weren’t exactly raving about Underworld. That shot, btw, is from Crystal Dynamics’ second effort, Tomb Raider Anniversary.

@Gibblet- I thought Lara was generic from the outset, and Eidos certainly havn’t helped matters by declining to change her outfit throughout the years.

Actually, she did go through a few outfit changes in the current gen games.

    1) I find her attractive, both her N64 and X360 incarnations.

    2) It was either her or Cortana, and even I’m not that nerdy.
